An adhesive is a substance that fastens or bonds materials using surface attachment. The strength depends on the strength of the attachement material surface (substrate) & the strength of the adhesive termed cohesion.
Adhesive bond - theory of adhesive bonding, maechnical interlock theory. adsorption theory, chemisorption theory, electrostatic theory, diffusion theory & weak boundary layer theory.
Natural Adhesives are generally set by solvent evaporation and are of low strength and susceptible to moisture and mould.
Rubber adhesives are based on natural and synthetic rubbers set by solvent evaporation or heat curing. They have a low shear strength and suffer from creep.
Thermoplastic adhesives include polyvinyl acetate (PVA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyacrylates, acrylic solvent cement, cyanoacrylates (superglue), polyamides and acrylic acid diesters.
Thermoset adhesives are used for high load aasemblies & servere service conditions. They are essentially infusible, insoluble and show good creep resistance and include epoxy resins.
