Woodruff keys are of semi circular disc shaped which completely fits into the semi circular pocket or circular recess provided in the shaft and which has been machined by a woodruff keyway cutter to give a good fit / tight fit to push the key into the recess. The woodruff key was invented by William N Woodruff of Hartford Connecticut and in 1888 he was awarded the John Scott Medal by the Franklin Institute. vented by The woodruff keys are generally used in automobile shafts and machine tools. Due to extra depth provided to the woodruff key it can be easily fit into the mating part and after that no gap left in between those parts.
Key material varies depending on the application and materials compatibles between the key and keyway shaft material.
