Woodruff Key Dimensions

What are are woodruff keys?

Woodruff keys are of semi circular disc shaped which completely fits into the semi circular pocket or circular recess provided in the shaft and which has been machined by a woodruff keyway cutter to give a good fit / tight fit to push the key into the recess. The woodruff key was invented by William N Woodruff of Hartford Connecticut and in 1888 he was awarded the John Scott Medal by the Franklin Institute. vented by The woodruff keys are generally used in automobile shafts and machine tools. Due to extra depth provided to the woodruff key it can be easily fit into the mating part and after that no gap left in between those parts.

Types of Woodruff keys

  • Full Radius woodruff key
  • Flat Bottom Woodruff Key
  • Hi-Pro Keys

Advantages of Woodruff Keys

  • Woodruff key are able in accommodating taper in hub keyway.
  • They are adjustable and can tilt in key seat or keyway.
  • Woodruff key is a easily adjustable key, with a hammer blow to the key.
  • Woodruff key is essential for operating high speed.
  • They are useful for shaft end. Their extra depth in shaft reduces the overturning tendency in its keyway.
  • Woodruff eliminates the milling around the shaft shoulder where concentricity and stress concentration can be affected.
  • Cheap an easy to manufacture seating in the shaft

Disadvantages of Woodruff Keys

  • They cannot carry high load.
  • They can not be used as feather.
  • The shaft get weakens with the depth of the keyway with this type of key.
  • Woodruff keys are difficult in installing and are short.
  • They are not used in high torque applications as they weaken the shaft.

Key material varies depending on the application and materials compatibles between the key and keyway shaft material.
