The RoyMech weld calculators section provides engineering tools for weld strength, weld throat area, weld shear stress, required weld size and weld group calculations.
A weld strength calculator is used to estimate weld throat area, weld shear stress, utilisation and required weld size from the applied load, weld length, weld size, allowable stress and safety factor.
For a simple fillet weld in direct shear, the effective throat area is:
A = 0.707 h L
The weld shear stress is then:
τs = P / A
Where P is the applied load, h is the fillet weld size, L is the total weld length and τs is the weld shear stress.
These calculators are intended to help engineers carry out preliminary weld sizing and welded joint checks using clear formulae, substituted values and worked calculations.
For detailed background theory, weld strength formulae and weld group property tables, see the main RoyMech reference page: Weld Strength Formulae and Weld Group Properties .

These weld calculators are intended for preliminary engineering calculations and educational use. Final weld design should be checked against the relevant design standard, material properties, weld procedure, loading conditions, fatigue requirements, inspection requirements and safety factors.
Over time, the weld calculator section may also link to RoyMech material property data to help users select relevant allowable stress values and material information.
Fillet weld throat area is calculated by multiplying the effective throat thickness by the weld length. For a standard 45 degree fillet weld, the effective throat thickness is normally taken as 0.707 times the weld size:
A = 0.707 h L
Weld shear stress is calculated by dividing the applied load by the effective weld throat area:
τs = P / A
Weld utilisation is the ratio of calculated weld stress to the design allowable weld stress. A utilisation below 100% means the weld is within the selected allowable stress for that simplified check.
For a standard 45 degree fillet weld, the effective throat thickness is commonly taken as:
a = 0.707 h
A weld group properties calculator determines geometric values such as throat area, centroid position, second moment of area and polar moment of inertia. A weld group stress calculator uses those properties with applied loads and moments to estimate weld stress, utilisation and pass/fail result.
These calculators are intended for preliminary engineering calculations and educational use. Final weld design should be checked against the relevant design standard, material properties, weld procedure, loading conditions, fatigue requirements, inspection requirements and safety factors.
